Paper to Plasma

Video Series

How much do you know about fusion energy? Maybe a lot. Or maybe, like me a few months ago, not enough. This series aims to take you from the basic ideas of fusion, to how a full-fledged power plant interfaces with the grid, each episode building on the prior.

Episode 1 - What is fusion?

This episode goes over the basic concepts, common misconceptions, and other bedrock knowledge for understanding fusion. While not as technical, the episode still delves into the specifics of the staple deuterium-tritium reaction. The most important things to understand from this episode are what Q really means, and the prerequisites for a fusion reaction.

Episode 2 - Plasma physics

This episode covers the plasma physics you need to know to meaningfully understand fusion. It starts broad, with plasma as an ionized gas, before moving into more complex ideas like Debye shielding. The most important thing to take away from this episode is how magnetic fields impact a plasma — this feeds into magnetic confinement (yes I used an em dash, and yes I wrote this by hand ok).

Episode 3 - Magnetic confinement

This episode dives into the first reactor-engineering concepts, going over the central idea, and various implemented confinement configurations (and their histories). The most important thing to remember from this episode is the difference between a tokamak and a stellarator, and the specifics of each.

Episode 4 - Heating, control, and instabilities

Probably my favorite of the series. This one goes over the engineering to get the plasma to the absurd temperatures required for fusion. It walks through ohmic heating, neutral beam injection, and radio frequency heating. The most important thing to take away from this episode is the absurd ingenuity required to solve fusion’s problems, and an understanding of the aforementioned process.

Episode 5 - The reactor core

This episode covers how the reactor protects itself and supports continued operation, ultimately ending with useful heat captured in the blanket. Throughout, we discuss core components, such as the first wall, blanket, vacuum vessel, divertor, and tritium breeding. The most important thing to take away from this episode is how these various components integrate to sustain the machine.

Episode 6 - From experiment to power plant

The final episode in the series: we explore how we convert fusion energy into grid electricity. We also talk about some of the pressing challenges, and success criteria for a fusion power plant. The most important thing to take away from this episode — and series as a whole — is an understanding and appreciation for fusion, and hopefully, the desire to support future endeavors.

I am by no means an expert (yet); feel free to reach out in an episode's comments or through my contact page with any questions, clarifications, or corrections.
